Administration buildings, training centers, depots, warehouses, maintenace buildings, marshalling yards, and controll centers for Etihad Rail in the United Arab Emeraties needed a homogeneous architectural vision.
A whole building shade was proposed to temper the desert sun. The flying roof protects the buildings themselves and also extends over exterior spaces to create livable micro-climates. All facades of the buildings are shaded to allow large windows and occasional glass curtain walls. The facade is assembled from modular panels composed of glass reinforced concrete. This highly durable type of concrete can stand up to the demands of a heavy maintenace facility and be treated with enough elegance to clad an office building.
Work was completed at SYSTRA in Paris.
