Two options have been proposed to clad the viaduct of the new Funicular in Grass, France. Both solutions are dynamic gestures that imbue a standard transportation infrastructure with a poetic spirit.
The first solution, lames, clads the viaduct in evenly spaces aluminum or stainless steel fins. Each fin’s form is unique and changes gradually from one fin to the next to generate a sense of motion and adapt to site conditions. The eye reads the fins not as individual elements, but as a single twisting form.
The second solution, ecailles, seeks a more regular construction by using a series of uniform perforated weathering steel panels. The dynamism and motion of this solution is created by varying the location of a single fold in each panel.
Work was completed at SYSTRA in Paris.
